Reindeer Cookies

Over the last few weeks we have been working hard to understand fractions.

I promised the children that if they could show me they had a great knowledge of fractions we would put them to use in a 'real' way.

.... I have been so impressed with how well the children have been able to read and order fractions that today was the day!

We made our own 'chocolate gingerbread reindeer' by baking our own cookies.  The trick was we were only allowed to use the following cup measures
1/4
1/3
1/2

Our recipe need full cups, and 3/4 cup measurements so we had to think hard about how we could make these measurements work ... or our cookies might have tasted a bit odd!

After we worked as a team and made a delicious dough we had a turn at using a rolling pin and gingerbread man cutter.

At lunch time Finn and Nicky baked our cookies in the Room 2 oven.
Our classroom smelt delicious when we came back after lunch.  We left our cookies to cool while we went to the library.

When we came back to our classroom we had fun turning our gingerbread men into reindeer by turning the man on his head!

Have a look at our cool creations

Santa Letters

Today we had fun writing letters to Santa.

We are hoping he will reply to us soon!

Elf on a Shelf

Today we listened to a story about the Elf on the Shelf.
This is a very cute Elf that Santa might send to our class to keep a watch on us as Christmas approaches.

We drew pictures of what we think the Elf might look like and thought of fun names for our Elf.

Harper's BIG Question

This morning before school Harper asked

are dinosaur teeth the same as shark teeth?

What a great questions.

We typed the question into Google.

We found this link Harper's Dinosaur Research

and this is the answer to my question

Plant eater dinosaurs and sharks have the same kind of teeth.  They have lots of extra teeth that come when their old teeth are broken or old.  They got new teeth about once a month.
Meat eaters just kept the same teeth for about three years.

Yer One Athletics

Today was teh Year One Athletics Sports Day.

We had a great idea for a mini inquiry!

Our Plan
Our class watched some of the sports.
We took photos while we watched.

Then we thought of some questions we can ask the Year One children tomorrow.
We will interview the Year One children and then make up some news reports about the Athletic Sports.

We will video the Year Ones being interviewed and we will write our own news stories then we will make an imovie about the Year One Athletics.

When it is all finished we will share it with the Year One children.

Here are some questions we could ask

  • were you nervous?
  • were you excited?
  •  how were you feeling?- before teh sports and after the sports?
  • did you feel a little bit scared?
  • when you finished all the sports were you puffed and tired?
  • Did you have fun?
  • Did you have a goal?
  • do you think you were good at athletics?
  • how did your racing go?
  • did you do your best?
  • how did the people who fell over react?
  • how did you feel?
  • did you have a great time?
  • was it exhausting?
  • what was your favourite part of athletics day?
  • how did you prepare for the sports day?

We emailed the Year One teachers to ask if we can go to their classes to interview the children.  This is our email.

Dear Teachers
Our class loved watching your Athletic Sports today.  We had fun and think you did really well.
We are doing a mini inquiry in our class.  We would love to interview some children from your class tomorrow (Wednesday).  We are making news reports and a news story.  We will be ready after morning tea.  Would be okay to come to your class and ask some questions please?  We will record your answers on our iPads and Mrs Pelham's phone.
Please let us know if we can come to your room or if another time would be better.
Love from
Room 16

A Dinoaur World

Today we learned about dinosaur environments.  We discovered that an environment is where something lives and what the world around it looks like.
We discovered that dinosaurs had lots of volcanoes around them and also lots of trees, rivers, water holes, grass, other dinosaurs, caves, sand, nests, eggs, fossils, stones, bones.

We worked in a group that  Mrs Pelham picked - we had to work with people we don't usually work with - this was fun and a challenge at the same time.

Our group all did a dinosaur volcano and put dinosaurs on it.

Our Teacher, Mrs Pelham, put vinegar, food colouring and baking soda in the hole and made our volcanes erupt.

We put dinosaurs on and made a dinsoaur world and we made the volcano explode - Tiaan

We put grass around our dinosaur world - Cooper

Mrs Pleham split us into groups.  We lined up by the door then we went out to the sandpit.  We made a volcano by piling up sand and putting water on it.  Then we got some dinosaurs from the dinosaur box.  When we were done we tested out our volcanoes with baking soda and vinegar.  We all watched to see - Lily

Some dinosaurs died when it got lava inside it's mouth! - Harper

We put sand and water on the volcano and some groups made theirs deep and some made them shallow.  When we were done we put dinosaurs around the volcano.  Mrs Pelham put some vingear and baking soda and red food colouring in.  There were little holes were the lava went.  Bina
